FIRSTSTEPS: MOBILE APPLICATION
Mobile app for parents of infants and toddlers.

About the project

FirstSteps is Android app designed primarily to serve the needs of mothers, but also care-takers,
who want to engage developing infants and toddlers in activities specifically chosen to coincide
with the child’s current developmental state. Tying information of perceptual capacity and
learned concepts with activities empowers parents to be aware of and delight in their child’s
cognitive development. While many apps monitor and track the physical development of young children and babies, FirstSteps is activity-driven, charging parents to provide their children with
age-specific ways of playing. Parents are informed about their child’s current perceptual and
cognitive development and are offered several activities that match up with their child’s age.

FirstSteps users can also browse activities for all age groups, and share their development with
photos and videos taken while using the app.

The Process
The 6-week project ‘Mobile life’ followed the design process, producing synthesis of research,
user needs, persona, a system-flow, wire frames of screens documenting scenarios of use and
a flash demonstration of onscreen navigation following the scenarios.
